What would you do if money did not matter?

In 2012 I came across a video from Wonderlijk Werken that asked a simple question: what would you do if money did not matter? I shared it because I thought everyone should ask themselves that question. It was not a financial plan, but a way to examine how I really wanted to spend my time.

It is easy to dismiss the question as unrealistic. Rent, groceries and other obligations do not disappear because you think about meaningful work. Yet the thought experiment can reveal something hidden by a full schedule. Which tasks give you energy? Which problems would you want to solve without applause? Which activity would you not want more of, even if it paid well?

Make the answer specific

Do not write down only a job title. “Become an entrepreneur” or “do creative work” is too broad. Describe an ordinary day: whom do you talk to, what do you make, what do you learn and what are you proud of at the end? Then find small parts you can try now. Taking a course, helping someone or making a weekend project tells you more than months of imagining alone.

If you discover that you like writing, you need not quit your job tomorrow. Start with one article and see whether you also enjoy editing, publishing and responding. A dream consists of ordinary tasks. Testing them helps you see whether the picture fits.

The question I shared then need not mean ignoring money. It helps separate what is necessary, what others expect and what you find important. Bringing even a small part of that answer into your present life can be worthwhile.
