Creating an online presentation with Prezi

When I discovered Prezi in September 2010, the contrast with a sequence of slides stood out. You could begin with an overview and zoom into the subjects you wanted to discuss. For a story made of connected parts, that was an appealing way to show the thread.

A canvas is not a story

Movement does not hold an audience’s attention by itself. First decide what people should understand afterwards. Then build an overview with only the parts needed for that message. Zoom in to explain a detail and return to the whole when you want to show a connection. Too many jumps can make orientation harder.

Prezi still describes navigation between an overview and individual sections. You can prepare a sequence, yet move to another section when a question calls for it. That can suit a discussion that does not follow a fixed order.

Prepare for offline presenting

The original article mentioned downloading a presentation. According to Prezi’s current help, this remains possible through the desktop app on plans that include it. Check your plan, computer and embedded media in advance. Video hosted elsewhere may still need an internet connection. Test the exported file on the computer you will actually use.

Prezi is not an automatic improvement over PowerPoint. It is a format that suits a journey from whole to detail. If the message needs a straight sequence, ordinary slides may be clearer. The tool should serve the story.
