Make an online business card with About.me

Profiles on different networks can contain business contacts, photos, short posts and personal updates. Together they form an online identity, but the scattered pieces can be hard for a new contact to understand. About.me offered a simple landing page where I could collect a short introduction and useful links. I called it my online business card.

Say who you are first

A page containing only social icons is not much help. Explain in plain language what you do, for whom and how someone can reach you. Then choose links that support that story. An outdated profile is better removed than displayed prominently. You do not need to show every network you ever joined.

A recognizable photo, clear title and brief description make the page useful for new contacts. If you have your own domain, you can link from it to work examples or a fuller story. The goal is for visitors to know within seconds whether they have found the right person.

Check the current service

About.me still offers personal pages, but the old list of supported networks, statistics and settings in my article is dated. Look at today's features before creating a profile. More important, check occasionally that your own text and links remain accurate. An online business card is useful only if it represents you now.
