Free internet calls with Skype

When I wrote about Skype, calls over the internet offered an appealing alternative to expensive phone conversations. You could also chat, share a screen and speak with several people. For remote work, that combined features that had not always been easy to use together.

A product with an end date

Skype is not a service to start using now. Microsoft says it retired Skype on 5 May 2025 and names Teams Free as a continuation for many core features. The old description of free Skype calls is therefore historical, not a current recommendation. Calling ordinary phone numbers was also different from an internet call between app users; costs and terms varied by feature.

What internet calling changed

Skype showed that a meeting no longer had to depend on a phone bill or one office. An internet connection, microphone and suitable app could connect two accounts. Screen sharing could clarify a problem faster than a long email. Group conversations helped people in different places decide together.

Other communication services still offer these advantages. Choose one based on whom you need to reach, their devices and whether you need screen sharing or group calls. Test sound and connection before an important meeting. Compare privacy settings and charges if you need to call ordinary phone numbers.

The Skype article belongs to a specific period in internet communication. Its lasting lesson is how much easier remote conversation became when calling, chat and screen sharing came together online.
