The value of a power nap

Around midday, you may notice your attention fading. The original post claimed this was directly caused by digesting lunch and that a power nap would make you fully fit again. That was too certain. Tiredness can have several causes, including too little or poor quality sleep.

A short sleep break

A power nap is a brief planned period of daytime sleep. The US NIOSH says a short nap can improve alertness for some people for a few hours. For people on a daytime schedule, it recommends a brief nap of less than about twenty minutes. Responses differ; someone who is very sleep deprived may still wake up groggy after a short nap.

If you try it, choose a quiet time when you do not immediately need to make an important decision. Set an alarm and allow a little time to wake fully. See whether it helps your working day. If you find it harder to sleep at night afterwards, that nap time may not suit you.

A signal, not a complete solution

A nap can help temporarily, but it does not fix ongoing sleep loss. If you often fall asleep unintentionally, cannot function well during the day or feel sleepy while driving, take the cause seriously and seek medical advice when needed. Safety matters more than productivity.

The useful core of the old article is simple: sometimes a short rest works better than pushing on while attention fades. Do not expect a guaranteed performance boost, and put adequate nighttime sleep first.
